San Marzano Tomato Starter Plant

$9.00 $7.00
Pot Size: 4" Pot

San Marzano is an indeterminate paste tomato that runs six feet or more and keeps producing until frost, so give it a tall stake, a heavy-duty cage or a string trellis from day one rather than trying to prop it up in July. This variety is notably prone to blossom end rot, which is a calcium delivery problem driven by uneven watering, so mulch deeply, water on a steady schedule instead of in cycles of drought and flood, and make sure soil calcium and pH are adequate before planting. Prune suckers below the first fruit cluster to improve airflow against the fungal diseases that Alabama humidity guarantees. Shipped in a 4" Pot, well-rooted from our Lineville, Alabama nursery.

  • Mature size: 6-8 ft tall staked, 24-30 in wide
  • Grows best: Outdoors - Grown as an annual in all zones
  • Pet safety: Foliage toxic to pets if ingested; fruit is safe
  • Sourcing: Nursery-grown by Wade Greens; ships healthy from our Lineville, Alabama nursery to the lower 48 states.
  • Light: Full sun, 8+ hours
  • Water: Deep, steady and regular; avoid drought-then-flood cycles
  • Soil: Well-drained, compost-rich soil at pH 6.2-6.8, limed if needed so calcium is available.
  • Feeding: Balanced feed at planting, then a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer every two weeks once fruit sets.
