Peonies produce enormous fragrant late-spring blooms on a plant that can outlive the gardener, returning larger every year with almost no care.
Zone 8a is the warm edge of peony country: they need real winter chill to set buds, so in Clay County choose early-blooming single or Japanese-form varieties and Itoh (intersectional) hybrids, which handle Southern heat far better than late double types. Plant the eyes no more than one inch deep - planting too deep is the number one reason Southern peonies grow leaves and never bloom. Give them morning sun with afternoon shade and be patient, since a new plant often takes two or three years to hit full stride. Shipped in a 4" Pot, well-rooted from our Lineville, Alabama nursery.
