Rhubarb Crowns

$21.00 $16.00
Pack: Pack of 3 Crowns

Be honest with yourself about zone 8a: rhubarb needs real winter chill and it genuinely sulks in Deep South summers, so Lineville is marginal ground for it. Treat it as a short-lived crop replanted every year or two, or as a fall-planted annual harvested in spring, and site it in the coolest spot you have with afternoon shade and deep mulch over the crown. Only the leaf stalks are eaten; the large leaf blades are toxic and must be cut off and discarded. Shipped in a Pack of 3 Crowns, well-rooted from our Lineville, Alabama nursery.

  • Mature size: 2-3 ft tall and 3-4 ft wide
  • Grows best: Outdoors - USDA 3-8 (reliably perennial in 3-7; marginal and usually short-lived in 8a)
  • Pet safety: Rhubarb LEAVES are toxic to people, dogs, cats, and horses because of high oxalic acid and other compounds, causing drooling, vomiting, kidney damage, and tremors; only the STALK is edible. Cut the leaf blades off immediately and dispose of them where no animal or child can reach them.
  • Sourcing: Nursery-grown by Wade Greens; ships healthy from our Lineville, Alabama nursery to the lower 48 states.
  • Light: Full sun in the North; afternoon shade required in 8a
  • Water: Consistent moisture; it hates drought and heat together
  • Soil: Wants deep, rich, well-drained soil loaded with compost, with heavy mulch to keep the crown cool.
  • Feeding: Feed generously with compost and a balanced fertilizer in early spring, then again lightly after harvest.
