Description

Fire blight is the one thing that kills pears in the Southeast, so stick with resistant Southern types: 'Kieffer', 'Orient', 'Moonglow', and 'Warren' all hold up well here, while thin-skinned European dessert pears like 'Bartlett' usually fail. Plant two different varieties within about 50 feet for good pollination and a heavier crop. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which pushes the soft, succulent growth fire blight moves through fastest. Shipped in a 6" Starter Pot, well-rooted from our Lineville, Alabama nursery.

Care Instructions
  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Weekly while establishing; drought-tolerant later
  • Soil: Tolerates clay better than most fruit trees as long as water does not stand around the roots.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly - a light spring application only, and none at all if the tree is growing well.

Why we only ship Mondays and Tuesdays

A plant in a dark box is on a clock. Shipping early in the week means it reaches you before the weekend instead of sitting in a warehouse from Friday to Monday. It costs us a day or two of lead time and saves a lot of plants.

Practically: an order placed Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or over the weekend goes out the following Monday. We'd rather tell you that now than let you find it in a tracking number.
