  • Seed-to-Harvest: Seeds take around 2-3 months to germinate, and mature plants take about 1 year.

8. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

  • Growing Info: Spider plants thrive in indirect light and can tolerate a variety of soil types.
  • Propagation: Best propagated by "babies" or plantlets that grow from the mother plant.
  • Where to Buy:
    • Plantlets: Amazon, Etsy, Home Depot.
    • Seeds: Etsy, Tropicals Plants.
  • Seed-to-Harvest: Growing from seed may take 6 months to a year, while propagation from offsets is quicker and can take 3-6 months.

9. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

  • Growing Info: ZZ Plants thrive in low light and are drought-tolerant, making them perfect for beginners.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated through leaf cuttings or division.

General Tips for Selling Indoor Plants:

  • Growing Methods: It's often easier to propagate plants via cuttings, offsets, or division. Selling mature plants requires more time, but smaller plants or propagated cuttings tend to sell quickly.
  • Online Sales Platforms: You can sell your plants through Etsy, eBay, Amazon, or your own website. Social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook Marketplace are also great for plant sales.
  • Packaging and Shipping: Make sure to carefully pack plants with padding to avoid damage. You can sell smaller plants more easily by shipping in 3-6" pots, ensuring the plants are secured.

Each plant has different timelines, but with proper care and attention, you can start selling in less than a year for many of these plants. If you focus on cuttings and pups, you'll have quicker turnover times to build your inventory!

Fastest Growing Indoor Plants (In Terms of Cloning or Division):

  • Pothos
  • Spider Plant
  • Snake Plant
  • Peace Lily

These plants tend to grow from cuttings, division, or offsets much faster than from seeds, so they are great choices if you're looking to speed up the process.

Tips for Maximizing Speed to Harvest:

  • Focus on Cuttings and Offsets: Most plants, especially the fast-growing ones, are propagated best from cuttings or offsets, which will root and grow much faster than from seeds.
  • Use Optimal Growing Conditions: Ensure plants receive proper light, water, and nutrients to speed up their growth. Most indoor plants thrive in bright, indirect light and consistently moist but well-draining soil.
  • Humidity: Many of these plants, like Pothos, Spider Plants, and Peace Lilies, grow faster in higher humidity, which you can maintain through misting or humidity trays.

These plants are ideal for getting your online business up and running with a relatively quick turnaround. They’re in-demand and can grow quickly with the right care, helping you meet market needs faster!

As a nursery grower, you don't have to start everything from seed. While starting plants from seed is one method, nurseries typically use a variety of propagation techniques depending on the plant species and market demands. Here are a few ways nurseries propagate plants:

  1. Seeds: Some plants, especially annuals or those with easy seed germination, are grown from seeds. This can be more economical and offers a wide variety of plant types.

  2. Cuttings: Many plants, like shrubs or perennials, are propagated through cuttings. This involves taking a piece of a mature plant (stem, leaf, or root) and encouraging it to grow roots.

  3. Division: Some plants, especially perennials like hostas or daylilies, are propagated by dividing the root system. This is common for plants that grow in clumps or clusters.

  4. Grafting: For certain fruit trees or woody plants, grafting is used, where a cutting from one plant is attached to the rootstock of another. This can help plants grow faster, or have specific qualities like disease resistance.

  5. Tissue Culture: In some high-tech nurseries, particularly for orchids or rare plants, tissue culture is used to grow plants from small pieces of plant tissue in a controlled lab environment.

So, while some plants are grown from seed, many nursery growers take advantage of these other methods to ensure healthy, uniform plants that can grow faster or more reliably. It often depends on the type of plant and market needs!
